Last year, one of my “new years goals” was to do my part more for the environment. But sometimes… it can be hard to know where to start. For me, my starting point was looking to others for inspiration. They say to surround yourself with the people who motivate and lift you up, and if you don’t have a clan of environmental geeks to hangout with on the daily, finding Instagram accounts that represent values that matter to you can help set you on the right path. It’s like they give you little reminders each day with their posts, for how YOU can make a change too!
Here are a few of the Instagram accounts that continue to inspire me to shift my daily habits in a way that’s sustainable for the environment:
I first discovered Lauren Singer from Trash is for Tossers in an epic video about how she has kept two years worth of her trash in one mason jar. Watch it below!
From there I’ve been following her on social media ever since. She posts daily tips about how to grocery shop waste free, find eco-friendly second hand deals, and anything to do with generally living in an eco-friendly way. She’s also the owner of Package Free (a zero-waste shop in Brooklyn), and has started her own eco-friendly laundry detergent company called The Simply Co… when all is said and done, she is a mega-goddess of zero waste living, and one of my fave accounts to follow on Instagram.

Once an ethicist, Morgan from The Garment now uses her website and Instagram account to educate women on buying clothes ethically. She partners with sustainable, eco-friendly clothing producers to offer seasonal pop-up shops with a discount, and also hosts workshops on how to create your perfect capsule wardrobe so we can all stop buying clothes we don’t need! Her account mixes beautiful photography, fashion, and really good information and tips. What’s not to love?

This is the perfect account to keep you in the loop about what’s going on to combat climate change all around the world. It’s literally environmental news posted on Instagram in short tid-bits that are easy to read, and interesting! It also provides a daily dose of hope after Trump does something like legalizing trophy hunting imports, decreasing park land, etc etc.

If you’re like me and get inspired by everything on The Garment’s Instagram account listed above, you’ll want to branch out and start following some of the ethical clothing producers she works with. Vetta Capsule is a great place to start! They put out a small release of clothing each season that seamlessly mixes and matches to make 30 different outfits. I was dying to get their oversized sweater that is made sustainably (in a North American factory powered by solar energy and everything) but it sold out in a matter of hours. Yep, their stuff is that good.

Whether you’re into ethical fashion, reducing the garbage you create, or interested in how our world leaders are doing their part to fight climate change, these few Instagram accounts will get you inspired to create change yourself. Do you have a favourite eco-friendly Insta account that I should know about? Let me know in the comments!
